Operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of
Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) have arrested a 35 year old man, Rasak
Isa for allegedly maltreating his 2 year- old son.
The arrest of the suspect who is a panel beater by
profession and from Kwara State followed a tip off from concerned
Nigerians who were worried by the plight of the victim.
Report indicated that the suspect who lives alone in
Katampe II village, Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital
Territory constantly locked up the son inside a dark one -room apartment
thereby subjecting him to untold trauma on daily basis. He was not also
allowed to go to school.
The climax of the maltreatment was few days ago when the
suspect was said to have pounced on the boy and beat him to a state of
unconsciousness for an undisclosed offence.
The child who has been rescued looked malnourished and is
at present at NAPTIP receiving medical attention and other assistance at
the shelter.
Speaking on the incident, Director – General of NAPTIP,
Dame Julie Okah – Donli, decried the development saying it was the
highest wickedness against any child.
“It is sad that a father can just lock up his own 2 year-old son in a room for a whole day while he goes to work in addition to denying him the right to go to school and food. One can imagine the trauma the boy has passed through sitting alone inside a house with both doors and windows locked. It was a detention in a real sense” the DG said.
